WHAT IS BREAST ULTRASOUND?

redhead_top.jpg

Breast ultrasound is used to diagnose breast disease or abnormalities. As with ultrasound, high frequency sound waves, between 2.5 and 12 megahertz “bounce” off a specific area of the breast where a problem is suspected.  The waves reflect back to the machine, and a computer then takes that information and creates a picture with it.

Medwise’s top-of-the-line ultrasound machine benefits for our patients:

  • superior image quality, particularly in smaller area scanning, such as breasts and thyroid glands.
  • produces images rapidly and without the use of radiation.
  • the ability to perform non-surgical breast biopsies on a cost-effective outpatient basis.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

Ultrasound is easy and painless; however, there could be some discomfort from the pressure applied to the transducer. You will be positioned on an exam table and a clear gel will be applied to your breast. A gel is used to eliminate the air bubbles between the transducer and your body since the sound waves travel poorly through air. The transducer is pressed against the skin and moved back and forth to visualize the area of interest.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR A BREAST ULTRASOUND?

There is no special preparation required for a breast ultrasound.

WHAT WILL THE BREAST ULTRASOUND BE LIKE?

Once you’ve arrived at MedWise, you may be asked to change into a patient gown.  The test is painless.  A special gel is applied to the area, and a small transducer is placed against the skin.  The images display on a computer screen.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TEST IS DONE?

There is no recovery period.  You can immediately resume normal activities and a normal diet.

HOW DO I GET THE RESULTS?

After your study is over, the images will be evaluated by one of our board-certified radiologists, with expertise in breast ultrasound imaging. A final report will be sent to your doctor who can then discuss the results with you in detail.

Should you have any questions regarding the Breast Ultrasound exam, we will be glad to discuss them with you.
